Forest bathing, is a mindful nature-immersion practice that invites people to slow down, relax, and reconnect with the natural world. It’s less about physical activity and more about being present—using your senses to notice the scents, sounds, textures, and energy of the ngahere (forest). Through a Māori perspective, forest bathing mirrors the principles of whakawhanaungatanga (connection) and acknowledges the mauri (life force) of the environment, strengthening our relationship with Te Taiao.
Forest bathing works by calming the mind and awakening the senses. As you move gently through the forest, your nervous system shifts into a more restful state—reducing stress, lowering anxiety, and supporting mental and spiritual wellbeing. The ngahere naturally emits beneficial compounds from trees and plants that help the body relax and restore balance. By tuning in—feeling the earth beneath your feet, listening to the manu (birds), and breathing with the rhythm of the forest—you create space for clarity, healing, and inner stillness.
At Whirinaki Forest Footsteps, forest bathing is woven into our guided journey through Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne. Along the trail, we pause at a special location to spend 10–15 minutes in silence and stillness, allowing guests to truly settle, breathe, and connect with the mauri of the forest. This quiet time encourages deep observation—listening to the manu, feeling the ngahere around you, and simply being with the whenua. Supported by cultural context, kōrero, and gentle guidance, this experience fosters reflection, grounding, and a meaningful connection to the stories and spirit of place.
